Questions asked by parents

What if my child is a first-time camper?

Most of our staff and volunteers are parents, too. We know it’s tough to send a child to camp for the first time. Talk with your child about the fun things they’ll get to try. Let them know that adults will be there to care for them. Tuck a family photo into their things as you pack together. Send along a favorite stuffed animal. Recruit a friend to go. And remember, all of our repeat campers were once first-timers. They know what’s special about camp and are eager to share their knowledge.

What about medications and medical emergencies?

A health history is one of the forms you’ll need to complete once your child is registered. A camp nurse reviews the history and administers all medications. In an emergency, a medical first-response unit is within five minutes of camp. The nearest hospital is in Nashville, Ill.

What about special diets?

We’ll do our best to accommodate your child’s needs.

What if my child doesn’t swim?

Lifeguards swim-test the campers. Those that can’t swim well are restricted to the roped shallow area. Lifeguards supervise swimming at all times and our swimmers use the buddy system. If a camper chooses not to swim, we provide a supervised alternative activity.

How do I know that my child will be safe?

The health, safety and well-being of each camper is extremely important. Camp Phoenix is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). It meets or exceeds standards for facilities, safety and staff training set by the ACA.

Our staff is made up of paid and volunteer workers who have been trained and screened according to the guidelines of the Episcopal Church’s National Sexual Abuse Prevention Policy. This policy encompasses background checks, screening and training. Our camp is smoke-free, weapons-free, and drug-free.

How much does Camp Phoenix cost?

The $275 early bird fee covers Sunday afternoon through Saturday at 10 a.m. when parents pick up at camp. The fee includes bus transportation from St. Louis to camp, lodging, meals & snacks and activities.

Register early to take advantage of the early bird fee of $275 and to guarantee placement. The camp fee increases to $325 after May 15. In the event that you must cancel and a written request is provided, a full refund is allowed until June 15 or a 50 percent refund until July 1. No refund is granted after July 1.

One reason to send your child to a church camp is to strengthen their faith life as an Episcopalian. One of the ways Camp Phoenix achieves this is through shared worship in settings that are not only unusual and stimulating, but also drive home the point that your child can find God anywhere and in anyone. Even if you are not an Episcopalian, your child will find the experience enrichening.
At Camp Phoenix, your child will discover a lot about themselves -- things like making new friends, meeting new challenges, living and working with others, and that "going to church" is not about being in a building, but being with God in nature and with others.
